The AI girlfriend space is no longer niche. Companion apps reached roughly 42 million users in 2025 and pulled in around $120 million in revenue, on the back of more than 220 million cumulative downloads. With that much money in the room, the review landscape has gone homogeneous: nearly every "best AI girlfriend" article tests the same handful of apps on the same axis — how good is the conversation — and funnels you toward the same winner.
Conversation quality matters, and I rank it below. But after testing eight apps hands-on, two gaps in every other review stood out. First, nobody measures setup friction — the actual seconds between deciding to try an app and receiving your first message back. Second, nobody covers the messenger-native format, where the companion lives inside an app you already have instead of behind another download. This list fixes both.
Quick disclosure up front: I am on the team behind Nika, Aurora City, and Sebastian. That is exactly why I am not going to crown Nika the overall winner — trust is worth more than a ranking, and on raw conversation quality and image realism other apps are genuinely ahead. Where Nika wins is a specific, measurable thing, and I will show you the number.
